Bone Density Testing
Osteoporosis occurs when the body loses bone at a rate faster than it is replaced.
To test for osteoporosis, your doctor may order a Bone Density Test.
It is a safe, quick, and painless method to
measure your bone mineral density and help determine whether you have
or at risk for osteoporosis.
A Bone Density Test is a 10-20 minute scan and you just relax on a cushioned bed while the scanner arm passes over your body.
How To Prepare For Test:
- Before the scan, you can eat and drink normally.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing like sweatpants and a T-shirt, but no metal, (such as zippers, snaps, underwire bras, buckles, or jewelry).
- Do not take your calcium the day before your scan and the day of your scan.
Risk Factors That Will Increase Your Chances for Osteoporosis:
- Personal History of Fracture
- History of Fracture in immediate family
- Current Cigarette Smoking
- Low body weight (less than 127 lbs)
- Estrogen deficiency: early menopause (less than 45 years old) or bilateral ovariectomy or prolonged premenopausal amenorrhea (for more than one year).
- Inadequate Physical Activity
Clinical Signs or Symptoms of Osteoporosis:
- Height Loss (greater than 1 and ½ inches)
- Kyphosis (curvature of thoracic spine)

FLU SYMPTOMS
As a precautionary measure, we are asking that patients reschedule appointments if they have signs and symptoms consistent with the flu.
Signs include: fever, headache, tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, and body aches.
Due to the increased risk of H1N1 flu virus, patients who present for an appointment with flu-like symptoms may be rescheduled. We regret any inconvenience this may cause, but feel these precautions are vital to health and safety of our patients and staff.
