Ankle, Elbow, Foot, Hip, Joint Replacement, Knee, Shoulder, and Sports Medicine Specialist
Dr. Edwin C. Newman, III, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in treating all injuries and conditions of the musculoskeletal system. He has special interest in joint replacement, sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, hand surgery, and trauma. Dr. Newman is the only surgeon in the Fayetteville region performing hip replacement via the direct anterior approach.
The son of an Air Force fighter pilot and test pilot, Dr. Newman grew up in California, North Carolina, Nevada, Hawaii, and Florida. His parents, his wife, and all of his family are from eastern North Carolina, however, and he considers Fayetteville, NC to be home.
Dr. Newman received a civil engineering degree from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and served more than nine years on active duty as an instructor and evaluator pilot. He accumulated more than 2,800 hours in the T-37, T-38, F-16, T-1, C-130, and C-17, served during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and was decorated for flying combat missions throughout the Middle East, Bosnia, and Herzegovina.
Dr. Newman left active duty to pursue a medical career and graduated from The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina in 2002. Before joining Cape Fear Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in 2007, he completed an internship and his orthopedic surgery residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is currently an assistant professor at Methodist University for the Physician Assistant Program and serves as a team doctor for the Fayetteville FireAntz.
When not seeing patients here in Fayetteville, Colonel Newman continues to serve in the Air Force Reserve as Chief of Aeromedical Services for the 315th Airlift Wing in Charleston, SC. He participates in an annual fundraiser for our local Youth for Christ chapter as well as other volunteer and charitable activities. He loves to play golf and spend time with his wife and three children.
