Ankle

Orthopedic Specialties

Our specialty-trained ankle doctors at Cape Fear Orthopedics & Sports Medicine are recognized experts in the diagnosis and treatment of ankle injuries and conditions.

Ankle pain is most commonly associated with trauma and sports-related injuries, such as a fracture, or an injury to the ligaments of the ankle, such as a sprain. However, agitation and discomfort may also occur due to overuse injuries, which can range from mild joint pain to Achilles tendinitis.

If you think you may be suffering from an ankle injury or condition and are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, it may be time to visit a foot and ankle specialist.

  • Sudden intense pain
  • Pain when you’re NOT bearing weight
  • Pain that persists for more than two weeks
  • Swelling that persists or worsens after 2-3 days
  • Limited range of motion due to stiffness, weakness, or swelling

You should also seek treatment with an ankle specialist if you begin to feel feverish or if the area reddens, becomes warmer, and feels even more sensitive, as these are signs of an infection.

Due to the constant stress and frequency of use, ankle pain generally does not subside without treatment.
